A short story about “3Js” in LSC of DMU(II) —DMU的“J氏三杰”(b)
J1 →J2 J1 was greatly moved by J2’s attitude. As a return, he decided to hand over all of his reference materials accumulated up to that time, all of the program lists, all program documentations, …dealing with SMS to J2’s group. In short, J1 had nothing left in the scope of SMS research, and he would never be able to make any further effort in this field again.
J1 thought he would have enough room to pay attention to, especially in designing an autopilot for ship’s steering using “modern control strategy”, but he did not notice sufficiently that this decision made his future research more tough ,full of uncertainty and unpredictivity.
J2 has been successful after 3～4 year time struggling. Their first SMS was completed in 1997, the system was really impressive by combining the precise mathematical model of ship maneouvring and the three dimensional dynamic images of ship motion. The commercialization of SMS proceeded smoothly.
In 1999, when J1 retired from his position as the dean of LSC, he recommended J2 to take over his job, that opinion was approved by the authority of DMU.
J2 →J3 J3, younger than J2 for 7～8 years old, graduated from Zhejiang University, is a clever man. He was selected by J2 as member of his research group. Quickly, J3 was sent to Australian Navigational University to make visiting study, and J2 had made quite a comprehensive schedule for J3’s reference. Then J3 became J2’s “second in command”, responsible to software development. J3 presented his intelligence and ability in his job, which won J1’s appreciation to a great extent.
J3 →J2 It was in1999, J2 did not do concrete “leading work” any more, J3 became the practical head of SMS group. Once upon a time, J3 talked to me when he returned from a business trip harvesting a big contract : “ Some body asked me an embarrassing question: ‘what does J2 do in the SMS research?’ ”, he continued: “to this question, I can say nothing, J2 did not do anything in fact.” His unfair evaluation about J2 was quite beyond my understanding. Why people forgot other one’s help so quickly? I asked myself.
Such an environment and atmosphere made J1 to leave from the group at last to create his second battlefront—This is life!
J2’s new field Now J2 is working in a new field—safety assessment for water ways and ports regarding to ship maneouvring. He has demonstrated himself for second time as a strong man, he is appreciated by the new users of his “new products”.
J3 Now J3 is the top leader of SMS Group and LSC, enjoying all the research results on SMS. However, where the results come from? Who has made contributions to them? This matter is worth thinking.
Nobody is perfect. Recently, a hearsay made me astonished: J3’s skills on computer is not as high as people may think of, in fact, he has even difficulties in typing a word document….. All the work are being done by his employees, this is in some way like what J2 was doing before. So I am wandering if there is such a possibility that J3 would go the similar way as J2? I do not hope so.

At the beginning of this article, I have to make it clear as to what the abbreviations LSC, DMU and 3J stand for.
LSC—Laboratory of Simulation and Control of Marine Dynamic Systems DMU—Dalian Maritime University 3Js—3 key guys in different stages of development of LSC,DMU SMS— Ship Manoeuvring Simulator
The article does not look like a scientific report, or a literary creation, it is just an item of my blog. It describes some interesting events connecting with SMS in DMU.
To avoid the figures involved in the blog from being interfered, they are referred to as “3Js”—J1, J2 and J3 instead of their real names. The “story” about them is not a complete one, restricting itself to the process of setting up SMS in DMU. The main efforts in this domain were made by “3Js”.
Why this blog of mine is written in English? No reasons, just for fun. The story has appeared in my brain for quite a long time. Since I am rather “busy”, its “publication” is then delayed. Now it is time to accomplish my original intention: making the story being aware by a limited scope of people who may be working in the same circle as we do.
J1 In 1984, J1 visited Danish Maritime Institute, he was much impressed by the SMS made by the researchers of the Institute based on Computer Generated Image(CGI ) technique. He got an Idea to set up the same kind of simulator in DMU in a few years time. In 1985～1987, J1 got a little fund from Energy Saving Department, Ministry of Communications, so research work for a SMS in a smaller scale used for ships sailing in restricted water has been carried out by J1 and his graduated students.
As result of the research, a paper which described the characteristics of the simulator in some details has been presented at Symposium of CAMS’89 held in Copenhagen in 1989. This work was appreciated greatly by the participants of the Symposium because of its uptodate scientific level, its shorter research duration(3 years, 1986～1989), and its rather small amount of money cost(40000 Yuan RMB). Their concrete comments on the research work were as follows: “The compact Ship Manoeuvring Simulator has a wide range of application, not only for developing countries, but also for developed countries’ navigational educational organizations.”
After this event, the problem on “If we should build up a large scale SMS in DMU?” has been discussed thoroughly under the guidance of the President of DMU, Prof. Chen. The conclusion was that we should get started the research and implementation of a large scale SMS in DMU right away. And President Chen made the decision that the whole work is assigned to J2 even though J2 did nothing in the scope of SMS up to that moment.
J2 J2, younger than J1 for 9 years old, is a hard working guy having a strong background on mathematics and rich navigational experiences. He has been a good friend of J1.
Undertaking the mission of setting up large scale SMS in DMU, J2 begun to chose his cooperative partner for his future research. He looked around at DMU, having a detailed inspection on J1’s simulator, and then concentrated his attention to Prof. Lu， who had done a little bit work on SMS. J2 determined to select Prof. Lu as his partner.
J2 →J1 A short time later, J2 suddenly changed his mind, shifting his interests to J1’s work and inviting J1 as his “general consultant” and offering a small amount of allowance every month to him for about half a years time. （See more in the next blog : A short story about “3Js” in LSC of DMU(II)）
